Summary

ISTA 3L is a general simulation test designed for packaged-products shipped through e-commerce retailer fulfillment and distribution systems within the United States. The procedure evaluates how packaged-products perform when moving from retailer fulfillment centres through parcel or Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) delivery networks to the final customer destination.

The test has been developed using observational data from retailer fulfillment operations, laboratory correlation studies and real-world field damage analysis. It is intended to simulate transport hazards commonly encountered during e-commerce distribution, including handling, vibration, compression and impact events.

ISTA 3L covers a wide range of packaged-product types, including parcel shipments, LTL shipments, palletized products, elongated and flat packages, and TV/monitor products.

Test Details

Depending on package type, weight, dimensions and distribution method, ISTA 3L testing may include:
  1. Atmospheric preconditioning at ambient laboratory conditions for 12 hours
  2. Atmospheric conditioning using controlled temperature and humidity profiles
  3. Shock testing using free-fall drop methods, with drop heights based on packaged-product weight
  4. Shock testing using tip and tip-over methods for taller or less stable packages
  5. Shock testing using rotational flat, edge and corner drop methods
  6. Shock testing using inclined or horizontal impact methods at 48 inches per second (1.2 m/sec) impact velocity
  7. Vibration testing using random vibration profiles with or without top load simulation
  8. Vertical compression testing using compression equipment or load spreaders
  9. Horizontal compression testing using clamping simulation methods
  10. Fork lift handling simulation testing for palletized packaged-products
  11. Shock testing using concentrated edge impact and bridge impact methods for flat and elongated packages
  12. Integrity testing using leak testing methods for liquid-containing packaged-products
Types of packaging tested under this method

ISTA 3L applies to individual packaged-products fulfilled through e-commerce retailer systems and shipped via parcel or Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) delivery methods.

The procedure includes multiple packaged-product classifications, including:
  • Small parcel packaged-products
  • Standard parcel shipments
  • Heavy parcel shipments
  • LTL packaged-products
  • Individually palletized products
  • Flat and elongated packages
  • TV and monitor packaging
The method also includes testing pathways for fragile products and liquid-containing packaged-products, alongside specific handling and performance criteria for palletized or oversized shipments.
