Compression Strength

Testing the compression strength of primary packaging materials is a critical step in both package design, cost reduction and sustainability initiatives.

Compression testing of packages

The compression strength of individual primary packaging samples such as cartons, bottles and cans is performed at Smithers Pira using a Tinius Olsen tensile test machine having a 25kN load capacity.

Larger transit packaging, including cardboard boxes, fiberboard cases and palletized goods, are routinely compression tested in our  ISO 17025 accredited distribution testing laboratories.

Compression testing of foam structures

The compression stress value and compression stress-strain characteristics of flexible cellular materials can be determined by Smithers Pira in accordance with DIN 53577.
