  • Food Contact InvestigationsMigration of printing inks  into food
    Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 requires that packaging materials do not transfer their components to foods in concentrations that might affect the health of the consumer or result in a taint. The migration of ink from packaging is of particular interest following incidents in the recent past of food contamination from printed packaging. Smithers Pira has specialist expertise in ink migration testing.
  • Measurement of specific migration
    Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as amended lays down specific migration limits for monomers and additives used in plastic packaging and articles. Smithers Pira has expertise in the measurement of the migration of monomers, slip agents, plasticizers and other additives to show compliance against this legislation.
  • Investigation of the causes of taint from food packaging
    In comparison to the volume of packaging produced each year, incidences of tainting (odour and taste) from packaging are rare. However, when a problem does occur, this can require specialist equipment, analytical techniques and particular expertise to understand the cause.

    This information can be used to assist in the comparison of material specifications or the investigation of poor material performance, for example delamination of layers of a structure.
