Smithers Pira tests the durability of ePassports and MRTDs against international specifications.

We use the International Civil Aviation Organization's specifications on ePassports and MRTDs (Machine Readable Travel Documents) as the benchmark for our durability testing of these documents over their intended 10 year lifetime. 

The physical tests conducted at Smithers Pira on ePassports and MRTDs include: 

  • Abrasion
  • Artificial daylight (ISO 105 B-02)
  • Book bending
  • Delamination
  • Dynamic bending
  • Impact
  • Pen stress
  • Torsion
  • Social chemicals exposure, including saltspray (ISO 10373-1)
  • Sheet turning and sheet pull
  • Temperature stress
  • X-ray exposure (ISO-7816-1)

These are designed to replicate actual-use conditions, and our experts will help determine which tests are necessary for your requirements. 

All tests can be carried out in accordance with ICAO technical report "Durability of machine-readable passports", reference: ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC17/WG3/TF4, for which Smithers Pira are UKAS ISO 17025 accredited.

Smithers Pira is also able to test in accordance with ISO 18745-1, “Physical test methods for passport books (durability)”.
