ISO 594-1

Smithers Pira tests conical (Luer) fittings to ISO 594-1, assessing their characteristics and functional performance against the requirements set out in the standard.

Standard name: Conical fittings with a 6 % (Luer) taper for syringes, needles and certain other medical equipment - Part 1: General requirements (ISO 594-1: 1986)

Applicable medical devices:

This standard applies to conical (Luer) fittings for use with hypodermic syringes and needles and covers components constructed from rigid and semi-rigid materials.

Testing capabilities to ISO 594-1 include:

  • Gauging test
  • Liquid leakage from the conical fitting assembly under pressure
  • Air leakage into the conical fitting assembly during aspiration
  • Separation force of conical fitting assembly
  • Stress cracking for conical fitting

Bespoke Testing

In many instances, testing requirements are beyond the test method parameters set out in a standard. Alongside our standard testing services, our expert team is able to develop a custom testing programme to meet your specific testing requirements and resolve and design or functionality issues you might have.

Please note:  This standard has been withdrawn by the International Organization for Standardization and is revised by ISO 80369-7:2016. See also BS 20594-1:1993.
