Dr Barry Podd, Independent Contributor, UK (formerly Associate Director Global Regulatory Affairs, Kimberly-Clark Europe)
Academic Achievements: Gained a BA (Hons) and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Essex. Post Doctoral Research Fellow for three years at the University of Surrey.
Industrial Experience: Spent 26 years in the Chemical Industry in various positions in Research and Development, Marketing, Sales and the Regulatory Affairs Departments. Barry joined Kimberly Clark in 2005 and was Associate Director Global Regulatory Affairs responsible for regulatory management issues related to chemicals, biocides and food contact around the world until he retired at the beginning of 2013.
Trade Associations: Before he retired, Barry was active in the EDANA and European Tissue Symposium [ETS] Trade Associations. Barry chaired the EDANA Industrial Wipes Group and the EDANA REACH Core Group. He was also a member of the ETS Food Contact Working Group and represented the European Tissue Industry on a number of Cross Industry Working Groups.
Dr. Alistair Irvine, Head of Food Contact Compliance, Smithers Pira
Alistair manages the Food Packaging Safety Section within Smithers Pira. This involves advising clients on the safety legislation which applies to food packaging in a wide range of different countries throughout the world and co-ordinating work programmes to ensure that clients’ products meet these requirements. His expertise spans all the EU countries, USA, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Israel, Russia and the South American countries. He also worked closely with CEPI in the development of the Industry Guideline for Food Contact Paper and Cardboard which was published in 2010.
Alistair graduated with a degree and PhD in Chemistry from Birmingham University. After working for BP and the Department of Health, he joined Pira in 1994.
Tony Lord, Principal Analytical Chemist, Smithers Pira
Tony’s work is concerned with non routine chemical analysis and technical consultancy in support of client investigations, problem solving, bespoke research and litigation. Tony also specialises in the investigation of taint transfer from packaging into foods. He is familiar with EU legislation relevant to food packaging.
Tony has more than 28 years of experience as an analytical chemist with 23 years of experience in the specialised area of migration measurement of substances from packaging into food. He has experience of managing EU and UK government projects such as the EU measurement and testing program “Certified Reference Plastics for Overall Migration Testing” and a Food Standards Agency project “Screening Tests for Visible and Non-Visible Set Off” From printing inks. Raquel Gonzalez, Senior Analytical Chemist, SMITHERS PIRA, UK
Raquel joined Smithers Pira in 2011 and has over 6 years’ experience in chemical analysis of migration testing. Prior to this, Raquel worked for GSK and LGC where she gained experience in the pharmaceutical and purity testing fields.
Raquel’s work mainly involves non-routine trace organic analysis and investigation work into packaging for the food industry comprising migration testing according to EFSA/FDA regulations and guidelines.
Raquel graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Valladolid (Spain) and a MSc in Analytical Chemistry from Kingston University (London).
