Tensile properties

Tensile properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, % elongation, elastic modulus and tensile energy absorbed are all routinely measured by Smithers Pira on plastic films and plastic sheet.

Tensile testing is used to characterise and compare the performance of plastic materials separately in machine and cross (transverse) material directions.

Smithers Pira tensile property testingSmithers Pira testing is UKAS, ISO 17025 accredited to British standard BS 2782:3 methods 326A-326C for tensile strength and elongation and BS 2782:3 method 320A for tensile strength, elongation and elastic modulus.

Smithers Pira also carry out tensile testing against International standard ISO 527 and ASTM D882.

The tensile properties of plastics are measured on either of two Tinius Olsen universal tensile test machines, including a hot box facility allowing tests to be made over a wide range of temperatures from -50°C to +150°C
