Puncture Resistance

Smithers Pira measures the puncture resistance of films, foils and laminates using relevant ASTM methods.

Puncture resistance is a measure of the maximum force or energy required to penetrate a material. This type of biaxial stress is seen by packaging films when packing hard protuberances such as pelleted dry foods and frozen vegetables.

Smithers Pira measures the slow speed penetration resistance of aluminium foil laminates in accordance with Defence Standard 81-75/3 Annex1 using a tapered 3.2mm radius probe. When appropriate, a pen puncture probe is used to simulate a sharper penetrating object.

Smithers Pira testing can be performed within a temperature controlled test chamber as necessary to simulate the actual-use packaging application.

Standards and Accreditation

Puncture testing can also be made using a similar ASTM F1306 method. This is a method for determining the force, energy, and elongation to perforation of flexible barrier films and laminates.

Puncture testing of textiles more commonly employs a ball bearing or rod as the puncture probe as described in ASTM D3787 and ASTM D4833 respectively.
