The Future of Functional Additives and Barrier Coatings for Plastic Packaging to 2018 includes the functional additives for plastic packaging such as antioxidants, antimicrobial agents, antistatic agents, anti-fog agents, clarifying agents, oxygen scavengers and UV stabilizers. Barrier coatings included in the report are metallized, organic liquid coatings, such as PVdC, EVOH, acrylics and PVOH, and the inorganic vapor deposition coatings, silicon oxide, aluminum oxide and carbon. This report details both methods with a focus on key drivers and trends, technological developments, end use and geographic markets, exclusive tables and figures, and extensive research.
Demand is rapidly increasing for packaging materials that give even greater protection to their contents. As use of plastics in packaging applications increases, concerns have arisen about their ability to allow the exchange of gases and vapors that can compromise the quality and safety of the packaged products. To meet this demand, a variety of functional additives and barrier technologies have been developed and commercialized. These technologies not only optimize product shelf-life, but also reduce the need for preservatives, provide transparency and gloss, and serve as a printing substrate.
Food, as a whole, is the dominant market for functional additive and barrier coatings used in plastic packaging, accounting for almost two-thirds of market value in 2013. Beverages are the largest single end-use sector, with growth in demand for barrier coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles for beer, plus other drinks, including juices, wine and milk. Pharmaceuticals and healthcare, pet food, cosmetics, and personal care have the highest forecast CAGRs for 2013-18.
Asia Pacific is the leading regional market for functional additives and barrier coatings in plastic packaging with a projected 57.3% share of global market value in 2013 with Japan alone taking 35.7% of global sales. This is primarily due to the large antistatic, oxygen scavengers and antimicrobial packaging markets in the region. Demand in China and India is forecast to grow at double-digit rates. Less developed markets of central and Eastern Europe, South and Central America, and the Middle East and Africa are forecast to grow sales at higher than market average rates. The larger and more mature markets, including Western Europe and North America, are forecast to grow at a lower than global market average rate.
