The vast amount of legislation on the safety of food packaging can be baffling and navigating through constant amendments to national and European regulations, plus changes in guidance documents relating to food contact materials is increasingly challenging for the packaging industry.

How can you ensure you stay compliant with the latest food contact regulations and best practice?

Plastics & Paper in Contact with Foodstuffs (P&P) is more than just a conference - it is a gathering of likeminded professionals looking to address all topical concerns in the food contact industry and develop their knowledge on how to best comply with the latest regulations for plastic and paper packaging in contact with foodstuffs.

The scope of this event is much broader than just plastics and paper, with insight into:

  • The latest legislation
  • Compliance case studies and pertinent issues of food packaging
  • Plus information on inks, coatings and adhesives

Presentations are delivered by globally renowned food contact experts, whereby representatives of EFSA, Tesco, DS Smith, Danone, Keller & Heckman, Steptoe & Johnson, MM Karton, FERA and Fraunhofer IVV were just some of the many great speakers to take the stage at previous editions of P&P.

Why you need to be at P&P?

By joining over 200 thought-leaders at Smithers Pira's flagship food contact event, you will:

  • Hear detailed and informative presentations with the most up-to-date insight into ongoing challenges, developments and regulatory progress in Europe and beyond - to give you a 360 degree view of the industry and potential changes on the horizon.
  • Get all your questions answered by European regulatory officials, national enforcers, legal experts and experienced industry professionals
  • Receive hands on training by respected authorities in the food contact industry during the specially designed pre-conference workshop.
  • Exchange ideas with key players from across the entire supply chain during the numerous refreshment breaks scheduled across the 4 day event, or be a part of a focused round table discussion during the networking lunch break.

Come see for yourself why this is the must-attend event in the food contact calendar

No matter what level of the supply chain you're involved in, there will be something for you.

The programme is designed to let you attend the conference that most appeals to you and give you the opportunity to hear about the topics that matter most to your business:

  • 1 December 2015: Pre-conference workshop
  • 2-3 December 2015: Plastic in contact with foodstuffs conference
  • 4 December 2015: Paper in contact with foodstuffs conference

Just purchase your ticket to either the pre-conference workshop, the plastics conference, the paper conference, or secure an all access pass to both the plastics and paper conferences.

The Plastics & Paper in Contact with Foodstuffs pre-conference workshops have always been a major hit with industry leaders from across the food contact supply chain, whereby last year's workshops were completely sold out.

Following the success of previous years, Europe's leading food contact forum Plastics and Paper in Contact with Foodstuffs 2014 will once again host two thought-provoking, expert led pre-conference workshops:

Workshop 1 (10:00 – 13:00): FACET exposure tool – Enhanced capabilities users

Peter Oldring
irector Regulatory Affairs - Europe

Dr. Seamus Kelly
Mathematical Modeler and Statistician
Creme Global

The FACET Industry Group (FIG) have continued to support enhancements to the FACET tool. The version to be released 4th quarter 2015 includes these plus additional features requested by EFSA/JRC. This will be the last release until major changes are made, such as incorporation of new dietary surveys using FOODEX2 coding.

In response to user requests, outputs from the migration model are now viewable, to enable better understanding of any exposure estimates.

Building upon the event last year, this workshop will give hands-on experience of running the tool and its enhanced capabilities. NOTE attendee’s need to download the software ahead of the workshop and run an exposure estimate using an example provided and also an example of interest to them, such as a substance, NIAS, new packaging structure etc.

Benefits of participating

  • Familiarisation and understanding of the updated FACET Tool.
  • Running the FACET software on your laptop under the guidance of expert tuition.
  • Understanding the outputs of the migration model and the exposure estimates.
  • Benefits for your business, such as using the results for petitions, customers, supporting documentation, etc.

Workshop 2 (14:00 – 17:00): New Rules for Assessing Compliance with Migration Limits Under the Plastics Regulation and the Impact on Global Regulatory Compliance Activities

Dr Anna Gergely
Steptoe and Johnson

Deborah Attwood
Steptoe & Johnson LLP

As of January 1, 2016, compliance testing supporting DoCs (Declaration of Compliance) for food contact plastic materials and articles falling under the scope of the EU Plastics Regulation must be conducted in accordance with the requirements for food simulants and testing conditions provided in Annex V of the Plastics Regulation, as amended.  The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has released draft technical guidelines for compliance testing that contain highly detailed and complex guidance for manufacturers, with recommended changes for the Plastics Regulation itself.  These changes present an on-going challenge for companies that wish to market food contact plastic materials in the European Union, but also significantly impact manufacturers’ global regulatory compliance activities.  This workshop will review the most important changes in compliance testing in the EU, then discuss the impact of these changes on global regulatory compliance, with a particular focus on the US, China, and MERCOSUR.

Benefits of participating

  • Overview of the current EU compliance testing scheme and the new requirements.
  • Reviewing testing schemes in other jurisdictions and comparing testing protocol development for global regulatory compliance.
  • Assessing the broader impacts of the increasingly conservative approach to risk assessment and compliance testing, including discussions on “chemophobia,” California’s Proposition 65, and NIAS.
